It’s no surprise, Apple put a little pun into Leopard to jab at Microsoft a bit. Sure, the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) is a classic Windows “vista,” but when I’m browsing my Windows network, or a shared volume on a valuable coworker’s machine, I don’t really want to see the BSOD all up in my face.

I think it’s my respect for “Winblows” that actually causes me to cringe, not embarrassment. I think. I’m sorry, but as a Windows user for 10 years before wising up and buying a Mac, the BSOD still sends chills down my spine.

What’s a respectable Mac user to do when they don’t want to see BSODs anymore? Change the icon, of course.

Following Engadget’s instructions, I mixed things up a bit to come up with my own.

  1. Download the new icns file I created with a nice Windows Vista CRT and unzip it.
  2. Backup your old ICNS file
    1. Open Terminal.app (Applications > Utilities > Terminal)
    2. Navigate to the proper directory (cd /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/)
    3. Copy the old file to the same place with a new name, it’ll ask you for your admin password (sudo mv public.generic-pc.icns public.generic-pc_lame.icns)
  3. Copy the new file you unzipped to the current location (sudo cp [unzippedfilepathwithoutbrackets]/public.generic-pc.icns public.generic-pc.icns
  4. Restart finder (killall Finder)

Now when you browse Windows machines, you see the bright cheery icon I made [below]. It still gets a CRT since I’m not trying to make Windows look good, I’m just trying to make it look not as bad. :)
